Ski Trip

Residential Trip from Saturday 15th February 2020 to Sunday 23rd February 2020

Each year Year 12 and 13 students have the opportunity to spend a week skiing in a chosen European resort. The ski trip caters for students of all abilities: beginners learn together on the nursery slopes before heading further up the mountain, whilst more experienced skiers developed advanced techniques including skills required to master off-piste terrain.

Salamanca

Residential Trip from Monday 24th February 2020 to Friday 28th February 2020

The week after February half term around 25 Year 12 students set off to Spain for a week-long trip. In Salamanca students stay with a host family and attend 4 hours of classes every morning at the renowned ISLA language school located in the heart of the historic town centre. The course mirrors A level Spanish and is taught by Spanish teachers entirely in target language. After an essential siesta, afternoons and evenings are given over to activities such as: a salsa dance class; a tapas tour; a debate about bullfighting with the president of the Salamanca Bullfighting Association; a ‘Mikro-teatro’ drama presentation; a paella meal … and much more. A day spent in Madrid at the end of the trip takes in all the key sites and some retail therapy.

Liverpool and Formby Coastline

Residential Trip from Wednesday 17th June 2020 to Thursday 18th June 2020

Each year our Year 12 Geographers take a trip to the city of Liverpool and Formby coastline. Students visit this area for two separate days of data collection for their MEA project, to look at the regeneration in Liverpool City Centre and the sand dune system on the Formby coastline.

Iceland

Residential Trip from Monday 29th June 2020 to Friday 3rd July 2020

Each year the Geography department offer the opportunity for Geography and Geology students from the Associated Sixth Form the chance to visit Iceland. The trip runs after the AS modules have finished during the enrichment period (normally early July).  Last year’s trip went for four nights which allowed students to see some of Iceland’s main geographical sights. Around thirty students normally come on the trip, it is a perfect trip for students interested in Geography, Geology and the great outdoors!

London – Technology Trip

Residential Trip from Monday 29th June 2020 to Friday 3rd July 2020

In July, the Design Technology Department offers Food, Textiles and Product Design Year 12 students a trip to London. Each group will focus on the opportunities the Capital has to offer, giving students a great opportunity to enhance further their learning, understanding and enjoyment of their course. We have selected a number of visits to give an insight into the diversity of design and technology together with subject specific activities to broaden learning and to develop in more depth their understanding of future trends.

London – Politics, Economics and History Trip

Residential Trip from Monday 29th June 2020 to Friday 3rd July 2020

Each year a group of about forty students from across the Associated Sixth Form enjoy a three day Politics, Economics and History trip London in July.  The centre-piece of the trip is always an excellent guided tour of the Palace of Westminster. Following the tour, the local MP for Harrogate meets the students for a question and answer session. We have often been taken to the magnificent St Stephen’s Chapel below Westminster Hall, and sometimes we have been invited onto the Commons terrace. Apart from Parliament the Politics and History students visit the Churchill War Rooms, while the Economics students are taken on a walking tour of Canary Wharf. In between we usually manage to fit in visits to the Imperial War Museum, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Cathedral. In the evenings we go to two West End shows.It is always a memorable trip, enjoyed by everyone. It is highly recommended for anyone studying Politics, Economics or History in Year 12.

Creative Writing Week Residential

Residential Trip from Monday 29th June 2020 to Saturday 4th July 2020

For many years now, the Associated Sixth Form has been taking students to a writing centre for a week in the Summer term to develop their writing skills.  The centre used is Ty Newydd at Criccieth – the National Writers’ Centre for Wales, and also the former home and final resting place of David Lloyd George. The purpose of the week is to work in a creative environment with professional writers: novelists and poets and is particularly suited to any student wishing to take an arts-based degree including Drama and, obviously, Creative Writing.

Goonhilly, Cornwall

Residential Trip from Sunday 28th June 2020 to Sunday 5th July 2020

Year 12 students are given the opportunity to travel on residential trip to Goonhilly Earth Station in July. Goonhilly is a Centre for satellite communications and space science. Recently St Aidan’s have established links with the Centre and through this, they have agreed to provide us with a week’s experience for students in this growing and exciting area of Physics.

USA

Residential Trip from Wednesday 1st July 2020 to Wednesday 8th July 2020

Each July, the Politics Department of the Associated Sixth Form is delighted to be able to offer a trip to the United States. Our new A Level Specification now includes a component on the USA. Among other aspects, this includes studying the politics and institutions of the American system. We believe that visiting the USA is an invaluable experience for students, and something that would bring the course alive and inspire a greater understanding of the politics of America. We will be visiting New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC and have arranged visits to the Empire State Building, a ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, Broadway tickets, a tour of Capitol Building and Supreme Court, visits to Independence Hall and Liberty Bell together with many other excursions relating to our course.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh

Residential Trip from Monday 13th July 2020 to Friday 17th July 2020

The Gold DofE involves: Volunteering (helping the community); Skill (a hobby, skill or interest); Physical (sports, dance, fitness); Expeditions (on foot, cycle, horseback, or water) and a Residential Project.

The four sections aim to develop different skills:

Volunteering – to encourage service to individuals and the community

Skill – to encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social and practical skills

Physical – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity

Expeditions – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery

Residential Project – to broaden experience through involvement with others in a residential setting.

CERN, Geneva

Residential Trip from Monday 20th July 2020 to Friday 24th July 2020

In July, Year 12 students are given the opportunity to visit CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles. Students will have a chance to tour the facility, as well as meet some of the professors working at the facility. We will also take in a number of the sights in Geneva with the full itinerary to follow.
