Year 12 enjoyed a whole day of activities on Wednesday 16th June to help them begin to prepare for life after they leave the Associated Sixth Form, whether they are moving on to further study or employment, and the Careers Department prepared two separate programmes of events designed to support each transition route.
Students planning to apply for university enjoyed an overview of higher education from the University of Southampton and took part in workshops on the UCAS application process, how to write an effective personal statement and student finance. Those who are currently considering employment/apprenticeships participated in alternative workshops with industry professionals, which focused on the identification of skills, qualities and the development of the teamwork, communication, and networking abilities necessary to successfully engage with employers both during, and after the recruitment process. We are grateful to the representatives from four local companies, Belzona Polymerics, Rudding Park, Morrisons and Financial Force for giving up their time to share their advice and industry insights.
Some of representatives who spoke were Ex St Aidan’s students:
Dan Ventress left St Aidan’s after GCSEs and is now in the 3rd year of an Engineering Apprenticeship with Morrisons based at their Production site in Flaxby.
Sam Gumbley joined Belzona Polymerics after A levels and has just been promoted to Technician level within their Research & Development Department.
Both spoke fluently and knowledgably about their very positive experiences at both companies and spoke of the development and progression opportunities available to them in the future. They also both paid credit to St Aidan’s Careers Department for all the help they offered during the research and recruitment process.
We look forward to continuing to work with our students over the coming weeks and months in supporting them to transition to their next steps after Sixth Form.
