Media
Philippians 4:8
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble...think about such things.”
The media Studies curriculum at St. Aidan’s links to our whole school curriculum intent statement.
Media Studies at St. Aidan’s enables students to become critical, confident, and creative interpreters and producers of media in a rapidly evolving digital world. Through the study of film, television, advertising, online media, print, and video games, students explore how meaning is constructed and how media shapes our views, values, and identities. Our curriculum develops analytical thinking, encouraging students to question representation, audience influence, and industry practices. They learn to deconstruct media texts and use subject-specific terminology to express their ideas with precision and clarity. Media Studies also promotes technical and creative skills, allowing students to plan, script, film, and edit their own media products in response to real-world briefs. We study a range of texts from different time periods, genres, and cultural perspectives to foster cultural awareness and critical literacy. Students develop key transferable skills—research, evaluation, communication, and digital proficiency—that support success in other subjects and in future careers. The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, with regular assessment and feedback to ensure progress. Media Studies at St Aidan’s prepares students to navigate and contribute to the media-saturated world they live in—thoughtfully, creatively, and with a critical eye.

Sustainability within Media Studies
In our Media Studies programme, sustainability is explored through both content and production. Students analyse how environmental issues are represented in film, advertising, news, and social media, and consider the media’s role in shaping public attitudes towards sustainability. Critical thinking is central, with students examining the environmental impact of media industries and the ethics of consumption. By combining creativity with awareness, we equip students to produce and critique media that not only informs but also inspires positive, sustainable change.
