Student Wellbeing
SEMH Statement
At St. Aidan’s Church of England High School, we are deeply committed to supporting the social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs of every student. Guided by our Christian foundation and the example of Saint Aidan, we strive to be a centre of educational excellence where each individual experiences “life in all its fullness.”
We recognise that emotional wellbeing is fundamental to learning, personal development, and long-term success. Our inclusive and compassionate approach ensures that students facing SEMH challenges are met with understanding, dignity, and tailored support.
Through a strong pastoral system, dedicated staff, and close collaboration with families and external agencies, we provide early intervention, targeted strategies, and safe spaces for students to express themselves and build resilience within the foundations of academic excellence. Our Curriculum and St. Aidan's offer promote emotional literacy, self-esteem, and positive relationships, helping students to flourish both academically and personally.
At St Aidan’s, we believe that every student deserves to feel safe, valued, and empowered. Our commitment to SEMH reflects our core values of love, compassion, and respect, and our belief that every young person is a unique and precious individual.
We have a full time counsellor working in school to support our students alongside pastoral staff who work within each year group.
Medical Needs
Some pupils with long-term and complex medical conditions may require on-going support, medicines or care whilst at school to help them manage their condition and keep them well. Please read the St. Aidan’s policy on Medical Conditions for further information.
- For pupils with moderate to severe asthma or moderate allergic reactions parents should send in a copy of their child's appropriate care plan if they have one in to school for the attention of the Medical Manager. Students with severe allergic reactions should already have an up-to-date care plan in place.
- For other long term or complex medical conditions please contact the Medical Manager if you feel an Individual Healthcare Plan would be appropriate and the Medical Manager has not yet been in contact with you this academic year. An Individual Healthcare Plan and care plans for specific medical conditions are available
Medication
If your child requires medication whilst at school – either to self-administer or for school to administer, these forms are available below.
- Medicines should only be administered at school when it would be detrimental to a child’s health or school attendance not to do so.
- Where clinically possible, medicines should be prescribed in dose frequencies which enable them to be taken outside school hours.
- School can only accept prescribed medicines that are in-date, labelled, provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include instructions for administration, dosage and storage.
- Schools are now able to hold asthma inhalers for emergency use with parental written consent.
Emergency salbutamol inhalers in schools
The Government has issued new guidance on the use of emergency salbutamol inhalers in schools – the guidance can be found here. The emergency salbutamol inhaler should only be used by children, for whom written parental consent for use of the emergency inhaler has been given, who have either been diagnosed with asthma and prescribed an inhaler, or who have been prescribed an inhaler as reliever medication.
The consent form can be found below. Please sign and return to the Medical Room Manager, Mrs Littlejohn, in the medical room.
