Sociology

Choose a subject

Romans 12:5
“So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

The Sociology curriculum at St. Aidan’s links to our whole school curriculum intent statement. Sociology encourages students to question the world around them: to explore how society functions, why inequalities exist, and how individuals and groups shape, and are shaped by, social structures.

It is a subject that fosters critical thinking, social awareness, and a strong sense of justice. The curriculum is designed to build a clear and progressive understanding of key sociological concepts, theories, and methods. Students investigate topics such as families, education, crime, media and social stratification, making meaningful connections between individual and wider societal patterns. Throughout the course, students develop essential skills in research, analysis, and evaluation. Literacy is at the heart of the subject, with regular opportunities to construct well-reasoned arguments, interpret sociological data, and use technical language with confidence and precision. Sociology supports the wider values of St. Aidan’s by promoting empathy, inclusion, kindness and an understanding of diverse communities. Students are encouraged to reflect on their role in society and consider how they can contribute to a fairer and more compassionate world. Through thoughtful teaching and a supportive learning environment, Sociology at St. Aidan’s equips students not only with academic knowledge, but with the perspective and confidence to make a meaningful difference in society.
