Proverbs 22:6
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

The Child Care curriculum at St Aidan’s links to our whole school curriculum intent statement. Child Development supports students in understanding how children grow, learn, and thrive - and how they, in turn, can positively shape young lives.

The curriculum is linked to everyday topics and real-world experiences, delivered in a thoughtful and engaging way that encourages reflection, compassion, and purpose. Our approach allows students to explore the science and care behind early years development, laying a strong foundation for future study and careers in education, childcare, health, and social care. In Year 11, students begin by investigating key developmental milestones and theories, before moving into coursework focused on improving childcare practice, supporting health and nutrition, and understanding the wider role of family and community systems. Throughout the course, students build both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding. Regular assessment of written and applied work ensures progress is secure, while literacy, research, and use of technical vocabulary are embedded at every stage. Students also learn how innovation in child development contributes to the wellbeing of future generations and to a more informed, caring society. Through expert teaching and a nurturing learning environment, students grow in confidence, empathy, and skill—ready to respond to the needs of others and flourish as individuals committed to making a difference.
