Bee Happy, Bee Creative – together we can be Bee kind!

The Big Bee Competition! There was a real buzz around school and as luck would hive it, we had a real life bee colony in the Science Department before half term. Students were excited to see them and to spot the all-important queen bee!

FACT: Did you know that in the UK a one third of all crops are pollination dependent, 70 different types of crop are bee pollinated and bees contribute £400 million pounds to the economy!

Sadly bee numbers are declining due to habitat loss, use of pesticides and disease. We therefore asked students to help us increase people’s awareness of the problem by designing an informative poster which included, why bees are so important, what we can do to protect bees and what we can do in our gardens to increase the number of bees.

We received a large number of fantastic, colourful and informative entries with some great tips for helping bee numbers. They were judged by an expert panel who were very impressed with the quality of the entries!

Year 8 Winners were:

1st Place – Grace Ramsden, 2nd Place – Sophia Hartley and 3rd Place – Tom Lachmann

Year 7 Winners were:

1st Place – Isabel Burden, 2nd Place – Eve Dinsdale and 3rd Place – Darcey Hutchinson

Well done to all the winners who received a bag of bee-related goodies and well done to everyone who entered! All the posters will be used to create an informative display within school.
