Interform Cooking Contest

The Year 8 Interform Pizza Competition took place last night in our Food technology department.

Students from each of the 9 forms in Year 8 took part in the 2nd Annual Interform Cooking Contest following a record number of applicants which led to stiff competition of one of the 4 places in each team.

The brief from Food Technology teacher Mrs Hedges was for teams to work collaboratively using their combined kitchen skills and knowledge to devise three dishes to make up a complete meal, using as many fresh ingredients as possible.

The main course was to be any type of bread based pizza, served alongside a complementary side dish such as a salad or seasonal vegetables with accompanying dressing, salsa or dip, plus a dessert featuring fresh or cooked fruit. The menu needed to be well balanced, colourful and appetising whilst also demonstrating flair and creativity! Students also needed to plan their work to ensure everything was prepared, presented and cleared away within one hour.

Guest judge Stephanie Moon, Consultant Chef at Rudding Park, together with Head of Year 8 Mr Alker, had a really tough job coming up with three top teams as the standard of ability, understanding and originality was so high.

However, after talking to all the contestants, hearing about their inspirations and tasting each dish they eventually named teams from 8Y (1st) 8H (2nd) and 8S (3rd) as the winning teams. 8Y had a pizza featuring St Aidan’s 50th Anniversary decoration!

All 12 students were thrilled to discover that their prize would be a truly unique experience, an invitation to Rudding Park’s private 14 seater cinema to watch a film chosen with teachers, followed by a tour of the Rudding Park kitchens and garden, and to top it all a pizza supper cooked by Rudding Park’s Chefs!
