Healthy Eating Competition in association with Fodder
As part of the British Nutrition Foundations Health Eating Week 2017, St Aidan’s Year 7 students all joined in to create their own healthy cous cous salad. The local award winning food store, Fodder, who are part of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, kindly agreed to sponsor the event. They are keen to support food education as part of their many charity responsibilities.
The top eleven ideas were selected as they were the most colourful, tasty and they included a good selection of fruit or vegetables to help us to eat more of our Five a Day.
The students chopped, grated, roasted and carefully presented their products for the judging panel.
The judges were Medhi, the Head Chef from Fodder (who was a contestant on BBC Masterchef), alongside our own food expert Mrs Kate Douglas, Head of Year 7.
The standard was so high and two salads were selected as highly commended with one final winner:
Emily Gee- Highly Commended
Hannah Regnier- Highly Commended
The winner was Rohan Turner with a delicious combination including couscous, grated carrots, roasted red peppers and onions and an aromatic dressing using the spices, turmeric and cumin with lemon zest and lime juice. To add even more fruit and vegetables he also added sultanas and dried apricots and finished it off with a few pomegranate seeds.
Rohan was presented with a fabulous hamper, which was kindly donated by Fodder and included a selection of healthy local foods. Rohan’s salad will now be made in large quantities and will be available for sale in St Aidan’s school dining rooms this week.
