Pupils Personal Reflections

2014 Highlights

“The 1st March this year was very special for two reasons: first, it was my birthday; and, second, it was the day I found myself with nine other students sat on an Emirates flight heading to the other side of the world. When we landed ‘Down Under’ some 27 hours later we were whisked straight off to Carey Baptist Grammar School to start a full day of school. The Australian Exchange co-ordinator, Mrs Parkinson, was on hand to ensure we could find our way around the school and introduced us to the Carey Exchange students for the first time. Everyone from St. Aidan’s was given Carey uniforms: the boys got to wear shorts and the girls all had yellow checked summer dresses – very similar to those seen on ‘Neighbours’. There were lots of differences in school life in Melbourne; PE was my favourite lesson – I got to learn how to play lacrosse. Away from school my host family had arranged some amazing experiences for me, like visiting a hot spring, watching some AFL games at the MCG and organising a trip up the Great Ocean Road. This was a unique opportunity which has given me some fantastic experiences which will stay with me forever.” Eleanor Horner, 9G

“Being in England for six amazing weeks has been such an incredible experience for us ten Australian students. The big group of exchanges has become like family and everyone has made it so easy to fit into the English lifestyle. Between the ten of us we have been so lucky to travel to London, the Lake District and Scotland, and we all loved the Year 9 trips. We have all done so many fun activities together with new friends, including laser quest, movies, camp outs, festivals and many more. To start with we found England and St Aidan’s very different to our lives in Australia; it has been awesome to see double decker buses driving around the streets and to eat our lunches in a dining hall, which has all become very normal to us. The farewells on our last day are going to be extremely difficult and very sad.” Caroline Macdonald & Hannah Jackson, Carey
