psychology - Year 2

Once again you will have a text book and syllabus and 5 lessons per week. You may find that you haven't got the same teachers at AS - this just depends upon how the timetable works out. However we try to keep at least one teacher the same.

In this year of the course there are 2 modules. In Unit 3 you will cover three topics in a way similar to how you covered topics at AS. Your teachers can select from a wide range, but you are likely to cover 3 topics from Bodily Rhythms, Sleep and Dreaming; Relationships; Perception; Aggression; Cognitive Development, Eating Behaviour, Gender.

In bodily rhythms, sleep and dreaming, the issues are what controls these rhythms in our lives and what they are for.

Areas of Relationships covered are attraction, formation, maintenance and breakdown of relationships, plus psychological explanations of love, cultural differences in relationships and Understudied relationships, such as homosexual and 'electronic' relationships.

Perception concerns how we process visual information, how we perceive depth and size and why we see illusions.

Aggression is about the causes of aggression; altruism and bystander behaviour, and how the media influences behaviour.

Cognitive Development is about how children's thinking, intelligence and morality develops. Gender looks at the theories of gender development and the biological and social influences on it.

Unit 4

This is a 'Psychology in Action' unit and also covers the research methods used by psychologists. This is split up into three sections:

Psychopathology

Here you will study Depression orSchizophrenia or an Anxiety Disorder and discover how different psychological approaches explain these conditions.

Psychology in Action

In this section you have to be able to look at how psychology has contributed to the media, or to the understanding and treatment of addiction..

Psychological Research and the Scientific Method

You will look at Psychology as a science and at what psychologists do with the data they generate. This is the maths bit!!.

There is no coursework at A2.
