Politics & government -
Extra-curricular activities

Trips

We organise at least one trip in Year 12 to London to visit Parliament. For the last two years this has taken place after the AS exams in July. The visit includes the following:

  • Travel to and from London
  • Overnight Stay
  • Tour of the Houses of Parliament
  • Cabinet War Rooms
  • Imperial War Museum

Elections

Politics students are encouraged to take an active part in any YVote Mock Elections organised by the Electoral Commission (www.electoralcommission.org.uk). In advance of the elections in May 2005 we organised a St Aidans Electoral commission made up of both staff and 6th form students to organise the whole school mock elections which took place on 7th April. The Liberal Democrats won with 43% of the votes.

Visitors

We welcome local politicians and experts into school to talk about their work or area of expertise. The local MP Phil Willis comes into school each autumn term as part of the UNICEF campaign to get young people to meet their local politician. As the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Education he is also a useful source of information about Educational developments for A2 students studying the issue of education. So he comes into school to talk to A2 students about Education issues and AS students about the role of an MP and workings of Parliament.
