Under-19 Netball

The  North Yorkshire County Round of the National Schools’ Tournament for the Year 12 girls was held on Saturday 15th November 2008 at Scalby School, Scarborough. St Aidan’s had qualified for this Tournament by winning the Harrogate and Craven Area Tournament in October. The County Tournament involved the top 2 schools for each of the four Areas within the County. Despite the unpredictable weather and a very early start to the day, the girls played really well and the results were very pleasing.

The girls breezed their way through the majority of their matches, playing with style, pace and creativity, winning their first 6 games. Tiredness and sore legs were evident in our final game against Harrogate Grammar School where the match was “ end to end”  until the final  minute when Harrogate GS edged forward to win by 2 goals!

This meant the St Aidan’s finished as runners-up to Harrogate GS – a reversal of the result in the Area Round!

Results were:

vs  Scarborough College won 19-0
vs Stokesley School won  24-2
vs Lady Lumley’s won  20-1
vs Easingwold won 13-3
vs The Mount won  11-4
vs   Queen Margaret’s won 14-9
vs Harrogate Grammar lost   11-13

Despite losing our last match, the target for the day was achieved – to qualify for the  Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Round which is to be  held on 31st  January 2009 at Wickersley School and Sports College, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

In addition, an umpire who had umpired several of our games approached the team at the end of the day to say that “ the girls’ attitude on court was superb.” As their coach, how the team plays and how they represent themselves and the school has always been more important that the actual outcome of the matches.

Squad members were ; Holly Carter, Lizzie Bonsels, Sarah Pallant, Claire Hardie, Amy Hill, Katie Lovell, Steph Bryant, Alice Boal, Emily Carter

Lots of congratulations to the girls.

Mrs Stephen (Coach)
