key stage 4 PE
Pupils in KS4 receive 1 lesson of of compulsory PE each week. Pupils may however opt to take up a GCSE course in which 2 additional lessons are taught each week as well as another lesson which is taught every 2 weeks. In the compulsory PE lesson pupils follow the National Curriculum and are required to complete a course in two activities from different activity areas, one of which is games.
The department also offers The Junior Sports Leader Award (see details below) in Year 10 as an option and also provides pupils with the opportunity of pursuing a course in Golf at Rudding Park Golf Club, where they receive coaching from a PGA professional.
Usually pupils in the non GCSE PE lesson are given the option at the start of the year of which activities they will follow. Blocks of work in this lesson are 8 - 9 weeks in duration and the aim is to provide pupils with the opportunity to become independent in their learning, thus enabling them to have opportunities to teach, coach, lead, umpire and plan tournaments/competitions where they officiate. Dance is offered as an option in Years 10 and 11. JSLA pupils are required to experience leadership roles in the wider school and outside school wherever possible in order to complete the course. GCSE pupils follow the Edexcel PE specification.
Junior Sports Leader Award
Pupils in Year 10 are given the opportunity to choose a course to gain the JSLA qualification. The course is run by Miss Wilson and this year there are two groups working towards the qualification. Pupils are given opportunities to lern skills, knowledge and personal qualities which help them to lead groups in sport and recreation. The course has been popular so far both with GCSE pupils who are looking to acquire additional skills and knowledge and also non GCSE pupils who are interested in extra qualifications and different roles in sport. Pupils have their own handbook and leadership experience is monitored. Assessment is carried out at the end of year with primary school pupils from our local feeder schools.
