St. Aidan's Learning Resources Centre

"If you think Marx shouldn't have wasted his time writing 20 volumes of Capital when he only had two or three ideas that could be summarised in a paragraph, then the internet is fine. But if you understand ideas, you have to read books because that is where the ideas are." (Nick Currie)

The new St. Aidan's LRC has 100 seats in either a quiet room or at tables located between bookshelves, there are also 42 computer workstations. The building extension has provided a new entrance and reception area, as well as helping to improve corridor space on the first floor.

In St Aidan's LRC there are approximately 15,000 resources. We are constantly purchasing new materials and withdrawing old ones. Besides books to support the curriculum areas, there are over 1000 fiction books and some tapes. White spine stickers are the norm, but those more suitable for Year 10's and above have yellow stickers. Easy readers have orange ones. Some also have genre spine stickers to aid the choosing of particular types of books.

The LRC normally has about 450 resources on loan at any one time, and lower school pupils are allowed up to 4 resources for a maximum of three weeks; sixth formers 6 resources. Fines are levied if resources are overdue, and letters sent home after other reminder letters have failed!

There are many reader development sites to encourage reading for pleasure, author profiles and review sites, which we occasionally look at in the STAR group (an after school reading group).
