The language teachers are supported by French, German and Spanish assistants and also by classroom teaching assistants where there are pupils with special needs. French is taught to all pupils in Year 7. This is a broad based language course suitable for all entry levels. At the end of Year 7 pupils sit an exam which, in conjunction with classroom work and overall aptitude during the year, is used to determine which pupils are offered a second foreign language in Year 8. This is approximately half the year group and the second languages offered are German or Spanish. Pupils are setted from Year 8 and in Year 10 opt for one, two or even three languages at GCSE level. There are pre-vocational or key skills courses in Years 10 and 11 for pupils who will not benefit from continuing to study a foreign language.
The department has an excellent record of success at GCSE in French, German and Spanish.
The Sixth Form in association with St John Fisher Catholic School, offers AS and A2 in French, German and Spanish. Languages is a popular choice of subject. Students regularly achieve university places to study languages and many have taken part in exciting gap year projects in South America, Spain, France and Germany.
