AS/A2 Geography

Exam Board & Syllabus: Edexcel Specification B

Course Outline:
Geography is a subject which is especially attractive to those who want to maintain strong links with the 'real world' outside the classroom. Rather than concentrating on particular countries, modern Geography adopts on various scales from local, through national to worldwide issues. Geography empahsises the integration of physical, human and environmental issues on a changing and often controversial world.

Syllabus Outline:

AS LEVEL
Unit 1 Changing landforms and their management
Unit 2 Managing change in human environments
Unit 3 Environmental investigation
 
AS LEVEL comprises a further three units of assessment which together with the three AS units leads to a full 'A' level award
Unit 4 Global challenges
Unit 5 Researching global futures
Unit 6 Synoptic unit

Fieldwork Opportunities:

Fieldwork is an important part of the course with a variety of visits possibly available:

- local studies in Bathing Well and Hookstone Woods
- two days in Leeds - urban processes and the rural urban area
- day visit to East Coast - erosion and management
- day visit to Langdale - river study

Skills:

The student of Geography develops a wise variety of useful skills. These are the basic skills of communication (written and spoken), numeracy and graphicacy (drawing and interpretation of maps and diagrams) together with those of a more specific nature, including: problem solving, data collection, presentation and analysis, ICT, use of fieldwork instruments, role play and stimulations, social skills.

Career Opportunities:

Geography provides a range of transferable skills, which are applicable to many degree subjects and future careers.
Careers where Geography is used and relevant include: agriculture, armed services, cartography and surveying, estate and house management, landscape architecture, recreational management, teaching, town planning, transport management.
Careers where Geography is beneficial include: accountancy, civil service law, local government, marketing, personnel and human resources, social services.

Appropriate subjects to study with Geography:

Geography complements studies in both the sciences and arts and is therefore appropriate for either discipline or as a link subject.

Key Skills:

Geography offers opportunities to develop the following Key Skills: Application of Number, Communication, Information Technology, Working with Others, Improving own Learning and Performance, Problem Solving.

This course is scheduled to change in September 2008 in line with all Geography specification alterations. Edexcel will continue to remain our examining board.
