The English Department - Pupil Grouping

Years 7 & 8

In Years 7 and 8 pupils will be taught in their tutor groups, i.e. as mixed ability groups, with the exception of those identified as needing support in English. These pupils will join a small support group taught by the Head of Learning Support.

Year 9

In Year 9 pupils will be grouped according to their English teacher assessments at the end of Year 8 and teacher recommendations. There will not be a support group in Year 9, but learning support assistants are allocated to students who need extra help.

Years 10 & 11

GCSE students are grouped according to their Year 9 teacher assessments (as above), SAT results and option choice of English & Media Studies or English and English Literature. There are usually four English/Media Studies groups and six English/Literature groups each year.
