English In the Associated sixth form
Each "stem school" has an English Department with its own Head of Department.
A range of courses are offered at A Level:-
Groups for "AS" and "A2" teaching are scheduled by the Head of Sixth Form based on student subject courses.
Students in English classes come from both "stem" schools and some have joined the Associated Sixth Form from other local schools.
The Associated departments aim to provide high quality academic teaching for "A" Level students to stimulate enthusiasm and create an environment where Sixth Formers can develop their opinions/knowledge by contributing to discussion.
Why Take English at A Level?
Many students choose to take these courses to A Level because they have enjoyed English at GCSE and lower down at Key Stage 3. English Language and/or Literature complement a range of other subjects such as Foreign Languages, History, Geography, Psychology, Maths, Science, Religious Studies and Art. The three English courses, give students an opportunity to read a varied range of texts from different writers and explore their own critical response through discussion and writing essays.
Entry Requirements:
AS: Candidates will be expected to have achieved grade C in English at GCSE.
A2: Candidates should have achieved their target grades as AS level and must show interest and dedication to the course chosen. If candidates have not achieved their targets at AS, they must be willing to re-sit those modules in which they have fallen short. Candidates who do not complete tasks set by the teachers or who do not present them on time, as well as those who fail to attend lessons regularly, should not expect to be able to continue to A2.
Expectations in the Associated Department:
Each student at AS and A2 receives an introductory booklet to the course they have chosen which makes the expectations of the Associated Department clear. The following are requirements of all students who take any of the courses we offer in the English Department:
Sixth Form Students are automatically expected to meet homework deadlines on time. They must communicate with their teacher if they feel a deadline can't be met for a valid reason,
e.g. illness
- Students must be punctual
- Students must keep tidy notes and follow up lessons by reviewing them
- Students must listen carefully to the teacher in class and fellow students
- Students must contribute fully to class discussion
- Students must take on board the advice given by tutors to improve written tasks and make progress from their own endeavours, e.g. make a plan for improvement
- Students must read all set texts and should seek to read more widely using the two libraries' resources
- Above all, students are expected to communicate a commitment and enthusiasm for the courses offered which they have volunteered to study
