science in the sixth form

Science based options at AS and A2 level continue to grow in popularity. Biology, Chemistry and Physics have all seen student numbers rise over the past 4 years. This has been especially true for Physics, with a 40% rise in pupils studying AS Physics since 2004.

The recruitment of such large numbers of students to study these subjects at A Level is far in excess of the National trend. It is also encouraging to note that the recruitment of girls in these areas is again far in excess of the National trend.

Students studying the Sciences at A Level go on to study a wide variety of courses at University. In 2006 our students entered degree courses in amongst others, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Law, Veterinary Science and Pharmacy. It should also be noted that last year 17 of our students went on to study medicine. This was a fantastic achievement.

Café Scientifique

We have started this new discussion forum aimed at students in Years 12 and 13 who have an interest in Science. In Café Scientifique we have a guest speaker who presents information on a scientific topic which may be currently in the news. This formal presentation lasts for about 15 minutes and is then followed by an informal discussion between the speaker, students and staff. The topics are selected by the students and they then arrange for the speaker to come in. So far the topics have included 'Designer Babies' and 'Climate Change'. If you feel you may be able to contricute to Café Scientifique, please contact Mr Shanks, Head of Science.
